Stratfield Homes for Sale in Fairfield, CT

Stratfield is Fairfield’s inland eastern neighborhood, built up along Stratfield Road either side of the corners it shares with Fairfield Woods Road. It is the part of Fairfield that grew as a streetcar suburb rather than a shoreline colony, and the housing reflects that.

Which Stratfield this is

Two places carry the name. This page is about the Stratfield neighborhood in the town of Fairfield. There is also a Stratfield Historic District across the line in Bridgeport, around the North Avenue and Brooklawn Avenue area, and national listing portals sometimes file Bridgeport addresses under the Stratfield name.

The distinction is not academic: the town line decides your taxes, your schools and your municipal services. Every listing on this page is in the town of Fairfield, because the search is scoped to Fairfield before the neighborhood filter is applied.

An older name than the town boundary

The name predates the modern geography. A parish was granted here in 1691, when the area was known as Pequonnock, and in 1701 the General Court renamed it the Stratfield Ecclesiastical Society — a name drawn from the two towns it sat between. Fairfield itself was much larger then; it lost Black Rock to Bridgeport in 1871 and settled at roughly its present size.

That history explains why the neighborhood reads as a hinge between two cities rather than as an outlying corner of one.

The Four Corners and how the area grew

Stratfield Road and Fairfield Woods Road meet at what residents call the Four Corners, the neighborhood’s commercial centre. In the late nineteenth century Bridgeport’s North Avenue trolley line was extended up Stratfield Road, and that line — which ran until 1937 — is the reason the area developed when it did.

Annexation by Bridgeport was discussed during that period and did not happen. After the Second World War the neighborhood filled in substantially, and professional offices moved out from Bridgeport.

Housing and what is nearby

The result is a neighborhood of two broad vintages: pre-war houses along and around the older streetcar route, and a large amount of post-war residential building behind them. The Stratfield Village Association counts more than a hundred historic properties in the area.

Brooklawn Country Club, established in 1895 by Dr Isaac DeVer Warner and a group of local businessmen, sits on the neighborhood’s edge. Sacred Heart University and the Lake Mohegan recreation area are also within or adjoining Stratfield. Note that much of the area is without sidewalks, which is worth walking before you buy if that matters to you.
